Simon Nelson, FCIA, FSA

Simon Nelson is a consulting actuary and Principal with Eckler Ltd, who currently leads Eckler’s defined benefit pension actuarial practice. He has over 20 years of experience consulting to plan sponsors on a wide array of complex pension issues, including regulatory matters, restructuring activities, union negotiations, plan design projects, funding and accounting issues. Prior to joining Eckler in 2013, Mr. Nelson worked for Willis Towers Watson (Towers Watson at that time, and before then, Towers Perrin). His clients have included a broad array of plan sponsors, including large corporations, public sector organizations, multi-employer pension plans and not-for-profit organizations.

Mr. Nelson was a member of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries’ Committee on Pension Plan Financial Reporting from 2013 to 2017, including Chair from July 2015 to June 2017. He is currently a member of the CIA Pension Practice Committee and the ASB’s Designated Group (DG) to Review the Commuted Value Mortality Improvement Scale, is a past member of several other ASB DGs and CIA Task Forces, and is a member of the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario’s Pension Industry Advisory Group. He is a Fellow of both the CIA and SOA, and holds an honours B.Sc. in mathematical statistics and probability from the University of Toronto.
